Styleart T-Shirt Review
One medium black Stedman t-shirt arrived in the mail yesterday in a luminous green plastic mailer. It’s a medium but a bit looser than a standard American Apparel. This may be my first time to see and feel a Stedman shirt. It’s the ST2100 COMFORT-T, if you are looking for details, and while it may be looser than I like, the cotton (100%) is nice and soft. The neck-band is very soft too though and I can imagine it stretching and becoming a bit droopy after a few washes. The inside of the shirt was a bit dusty for some reason too.
The tags are still on the shirt. That’s how I can tell you some of these things and also despite Stedman being an American company, the tees were manufactured in Germany. So I guess you can rule out child-labor.
The design itself looks like a pen/pencil sketch of a woman’s face (or a man with very feminine lips) with smoke coming out of her lips. Yep, smoking. While I don’t condone the glamorization of smoking I do admit that the image can be impressive. The image is reminiscent of both of classic film noir and graphic novels by the likes of Frank Miller. Stylish and cool. The smoke is highlighted with a pink, purple and blue galaxy style image. The text “high”, at the bottom of the design, uses the same color scheme. I like the composition of the design.
They are the positives but it’s not all positive. The design is printed with DTG and the black ink is printed on the t-shirt which means you can see that it is a rectangle printed on the shirt. It looks a little like those old iron-on prints. There is even a bit of a white line along one edge, although I am pretty sure that will disappear after a wash or two. The other thing is the size of the design. It’s OK at this size but I think it would be great if it were a large print taking up most of the t-shirt. I don’t think that’s an option at Styleart though, despite the images in the video above.
Branding and Extras
There is no real branding by Styleart at all. Nothing on the t-shirt (I’m OK with that.) and nothing on the mailer. Included in the mailer was a coupon though with the Styleart logo and a 10% off coupon which claims that only one out of ten orders are so lucky.
Website
The website is clean, simple and easy to navigate. The video on the homepage is very clever. The next thing I noticed was a lot of celebrity photos. On the homepage I recognized Elvis, Sid Vicious, Michael Jackson and James Dean. When I scrolled through a few more designs I came across a lot more. I guessed they aren’t licensed artwork but as I was investigating I realized that it’s a POD site where people can upload and sell designs. I don’t think they screen for intellectual property rights. The upside of this is that they have a huge selection to choose from. There are 116 Mickey Mouse inspired designs to choose from. I wouldn’t say that they are all good designs but you might find something inspiring.
Pricing
T-shirts seem to all be just above the US$20 mark which is OK for a POD site, quite competitive for a POD site really.
Wrap-Up
The t-shirt itself is average and I have doubts about its longevity. I like the design but it’s too small and doesn’t give a good first impression. The store seems to be full of copyright and possibly trademark infringements and while there are some nice designs there are a lot of crappy ones too.
I don’t smoke or get high but despite that I do like the artwork. But because of the size of the print, I wouldn’t consider buying this one for myself. Perhaps for people who enjoy a different lifestyle than me, the design would resonate enough for them to discount the small print size.
